CENTRE TECNOLOGIC DE TELECOMUNICACIONS DE CATALUNYA (CTTC)
The Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC) is a non-profit research institution based in Castelldefels (Barcelona), resulting from a public initiative of the Regional Government of Catalonia (Generalitat de Catalunya). Research activities at the CTTC, both fundamental and applied, mainly focus on technologies related to the physical, data-link and network layers of communication systems, and to the Geomatics.
The Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC): will be the project leader and has plenty of experience with this and a long success story of European, ESA and Spanish National Projects including carrying out demonstration campaigns and gathering stakeholder feedback. CTTC will also lead the pilot demonstrations WP providing its expertise in system engineering which covers all phases. As such, CTTC will contribute to the development of radio technologies and enhancements of the 5G core network functionalities. CTTC will provide their lab premises capable of testing satellite radio
technologies through an emulated link or with a real one. Moreover, CTTC will offer their networking lab to initially validate the smart gateway interfaced with MCx application and core network. CTTC will exploit the results of 5G-GOVSATCOM to increase its know-how on the NTN air-interface, the beamforming for maritime terminals and the sharing and pooling resources between terrestrial and non-terrestrial. The activities in the project will mainly contribute to transfer technology and knowledge to companies and to reinforce the position and awareness of CTTC inside the research and final user domain community. This is expected to bring new funding opportunities in the form of new industrial partners or of strong consortiums for participating in competitive calls. CTTC exploitation strategy is based on the rule of protect or publish, i.e., to publish any new acquired knowledge which is not protected or planned to be used in commercial exploration.
HISDESAT SERVICIOS ESTRATEGICOS SA (HISDESAT)
HISDESAT will gain important insights into the research focus on the industrial drive towards 5G advanced leading into sixth generation (6G) systems. HISDESAT will help to integrate GEO-Governmental satellite into 5G and future 6G ecosystems. Therefore, it will define new service opportunities around the EU-GOVSATCOM. That integration will help to decrease the cost per bit and to decrease the cost of the satellite terminal based on standard and economy of scale technology will benefit HISDESAT business. HISDESAT will provide support in the use cases and architecture definition. HISDESAT has been providing uninterrupted, secure satellite communications services to the Spanish Ministry of Defence in support of, among others, all international missions of the Spanish Armed Forces. It has also extended these services to other government organizations (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of the Interior, the National Research Council (CSIC)), in the process becoming a benchmark in national security, defence and intelligence programs. HISDESAT offers the capacity of one of their satellites providing support in the deployment of the services.
AIRBUS DS SLC (ADS)
ADS will showcase their communications critical application in 5G NTN and TN systems. ADS Critical Communications Platform (CCP) is an IP application, implementing the international standards of 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project), an international association for the standardization of mobile communications systems. The 3GPP-defined Mission Critical Services (MCx) include “Mission Critical Push-to-Talk “(MCPTT), “Mission Critical Video “(MCVideo), “Data “(MCData) and all required management services (MCX). It can operate over any IP connectivity solution correctly dimensioned with sufficient capacity and acceptable latencies. These mentioned applications will gain much more attention and applicability if they can be deployed seamlessly in 5G NTN-TN telecommunications infrastructure. ADS is the European leader for Mission Critical and Business Critical communication and collaborations solutions, with 30 years in this domain. ADS aims to leverage on the architecture and concepts developed in 5G-GOVSATCOM to enrich its already competitive portfolio of Mission- and Business Critical rich and reliable multimedia applications, devices, capabilities, and services, and hence maintain a leadership role in the PMR industry. ADS provides the use of MCx family of solutions to be integrated and utilized in the trials.
TELECOM ITALIA SPA (TIM)
TIM will gain important insight into the requirements of governmental agencies (end users)
in order to provide service solutions integrating TN and NTN networks. The project will also provide insight into the challenges of integrating TN and NTN networks. TIM also plans to disseminate the results via publications, conferences, and contributions to standardization. TIM ambition is to part in the EU-GOVSATCOM ecosystem as a major actor thanks to 5G NTN connectivity improvements, as a follow up of current actions achieved until here. TIM aims to add complementary between TN and NTN in the portfolio of TIM services for improving offers for EU GOVSATCOM users. TIM leads the use case, service requirements and architecture activities. TIM provides its commercial 5G network to the Trial 2.
INSTER TECNOLOGIA Y COMUNICACIONESSA (INSTER)
INS considers a Go-to-Market (G2M) strategy. Within it, an action plan is established covering all relevant aspects of the commercial launch, from product development to the logistics chain. The basic pillars of the G2M strategy involve product launch activities including branding, communication, participation in forums, and demonstrations to clients; business intelligence applied to understanding the market, different use cases and the value contribution of different customers; a fair pricing strategy including options to facilitate customer choice. INS will inject their 5G UE NTN terminal prototype to their technological roadmap. INS is a leader company in terminal development for governmental satellite and terrestrial systems. They lead the integration of the developed 5G NTN UE with their antenna pointing mechanism. They also strongly contribute to the trials by installing their antenna at each final user.
INS brings to the project their current antenna solution at X-band for on-the move and on-the-pause applications.
UNIVERSITA DEGLI STUDI DI SIENA (UNISI)
With this project, UNISI will achieve a deeper involvement with both national and international stakeholders in the field of TN and NTN communications. This is a significant and important opportunity that could pave the way to future collaborations and a deeper understanding of 3GPP 5G TN and NTN networking. Finally, the innovative and experimental work made in this project could facilitate important publications in open access journals reporting the achievements of the project. Finally, we believe that VHO is an original and innovative topic of research in the field of TN-NTN systems, and we are confident that this sector can open important future opportunities. UNISI is involved in the leadership of the key enabling technologies development and it will lead the trial 2 to be held in Italy. UNISI roots its background in an intense research activity focused on terrestrial and satellite networks. Through its expertise, UNISI will build a Smart Gateway prototype for managing handovers over NTN and TN. UNISI brings a software application layer development for the demonstrations.
PANEPISTIMIO THESSALIAS (UTH)
UTH aims to upgrade its own 5G SDR platform with NTN capabilities and on the other hand to upgrade its own computational resources with running MCx services. By facilitating the project, UTH will enhance its own 5G and beyond testbed with features that are higher than 3GPP Release 17 To this end, UTH will have demonstration capabilities for future SPACE EU and ESA calls. UTH will provide the MCX interworking with 5G NTN for future GOVSATCOM, where mission-critical such as public safety is important. This is a research-intensive task that needs special attention. UTH will work with the 5G NTN node and the MCX server/client architecture and make the corresponding upgrades supporting the demo of the project.
FUNDACIO PROA (PRO-ACTIVA OPEN ARMS) (OARMS)
OARMS with their background of saving more than 2,000 people in the Mediterranean Sea they will contribute to the service requirements definition for maritime scenarios. Moreover, they will host the trial 1 in one of their vessels over the waters of Catalonia. OARMS will offer one of their vessels and their on-board medical team to validate the end-to-end performance of 5G-GOVSATCOM in trial 1.
ASSOCIAZIONE DELLA CROCE ROSSA ITALIANA (C.R.I.)
CRI has a wide experience in deploying medical and connectivity support to disaster and humanitarian crisis scenarios. They will define the service requirements for on-the-pause trial in land and they support the integration of trial 1. CRI offers a mobile control room for the validation of the end-to-end GOVSATCOM operation.
